Cutie Honey Flash is a bizarre attempt to turn a sexually-charged Go Nagai creation into a child-friendly franchise. That is, with the intent of selling toys of said franchise to toddlers. That would be like adapting the gruesome, violence-saturated Beast King GoLion into a neutered, Americanized children’s cartoon… Oh, wait.

It’s most likely because of this series’ distillation of exploitation that makes the show more accessible to audiences of all ages. Cutie Honey Flash is about a super-heroine who is a resourceful master of disguise. I grant you, her arsenal consists of the full gamut of cosplay fantasy against a horde of incompetent she-monsters, but the girl’s got heart, dammit!

She's accustomed to stairs...

This man is a masochist and a pedophile...NOT A HERO.

In the Method to Madness podcast, I’m joined with my good friend Kevin “The Business” Gray to discuss great anime and video games that you should be watching as well as ones you should feel ashamed you are watching.

  1. If anything, Priss might be a reference to Hurricane Honey, since she was in the 70s version. Also, if you’ve ever seen the original version, it’s much the same sort of insanity as the Flash version, just less sanitized. The original Manga was less ‘exploitative of females’ and more ‘Okay, let’s take the piss at everyone’

The story I’ve heard with Kekko Kamen is he was trying to get rejected, but his editor loved the concept and he had to go ahead and do it because of a contract.

And while Go Nagai is responsible for a lot of fanservice nonsense, he’s also responsible for the Mecha genre.
So yeah, I do think the 1970′s Honey was marketing driven too, just for girls instead of the guys he targeted with mecha shows.

And yes, there are Honey group cosplayers. Usually just Kisaragi, Heroine, and Hurricane.

Don’t knock Danpei. The man is awesome. And turns himself into a super robot in new cutie honey- which is the dark future show a generation later. It’s not 50 years, like 30, since she lives with the now grown and married Seiji’s little brother, and his kid has a crush on her.
It was based on a continuation Manga to the original that actually got to the end as I recall.

As for the live version you didn’t like- Do you mean The live movie or the live series? Because the ’04 movie was super exploitative, but the latest one was pretty tongue in cheek about what Cutie Honey’s been and goes in a lot of new directions.

And yes, the intro gets done. A lot. By anyone and everyone. They released an Album of all of them.

P.S. Time to suggest Cutie Honey to Omi… Muahahaha

Kevin and I watched the first couple episodes of the original series. I think “Flash” just appealed to me more, both because it was more palatable to me personally and because I thought we could get the best podcast material out of it.

If I said I didn’t like the live-action versions, it’s more accurate to say that I saw a couple YouTube clips and went, “Meh”. I’m curious to watch more, but I haven’t been in the mood. Hezachan kinda satisfies my cravings to see Honey in the flesh.

My theory is that Omi Gibson is in fact, Cutie Honey… There’s just no space monsters that call upon her heroine form.

I think the only reference with Hurricane to Bubblegum Crisis is well, the Koyna wa Hurricane intro or the “Hurricane” Mototslave models in the OVA before they were upgraded to the “Typhoon”.

I also got kinda taken back when Ryan mentioned Saber Marionette J with the design for Fist. Thats another anime i have yet to finish but liked the first 8 episodes when i saw those back in high school and getting into anime at the time. Is there any chance you guys may one day review that anime.

I did like the rant on Tuxedo “Decoy”, good stuff. I guess if you get another shot at that guy is, well, if you ever review a Sailor Moon show with him on there. But, why would you wanna do that?

I just heard the words Saber Marionette J and i thought it came outta Ryan voice, and thought “wow, thats a great anime”.

    Who’s Ryan? O_o

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

    Sean Ryan, you i guess.

LOL, my brain operates in… different ways. And it doesnt help that Sean Ryan has 2 first names. Im sorry, long day.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

Bleh… I kinda hate my name that way. In its entirety, I am named Sean Adam Ryan. All three, first names…and all 4-letter words!

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

So, did your parents put any thought into your name, or was like “Eh, lets just make this really simple on this kid.” Im sure they are wonderful people.

But yea my original question, what about Saber, any chance of a review of that in the not to distant future.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

Kevin’s suggested we do Saber and it’s on the list… The mood just hasn’t caught us to jump into it.

It just seems its one of those anime that not alot of people really know about that I happen to think people should look into.

I found a copy of R, but i havent seen it as of yet.

Kevin has both I think and he showed me a couple episodes. This was during our “homeboy gon’ fuck da robot” phase.

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

Oh yea, theres an orgy of that going on, or harem with robots, or Tenchi with robots.

It does have that very popish intro though.

  2. On SMJ- the designer and Mangaka is probably best known for their porn now, hilariously like the artist for the ‘Electric tale of Pikachu’ Mangaka, and that is all I’ll say on either subject.

Sean, the two Live Action CHs are completely mixed bags. The movie is like a Live Action version of Re: and ‘The Live’ is a somewhat self aware series that doesn’t take itself too seriously while also exploring some of the material of the show in a more serious tone than most of the others did, if that makes sense.

As for Saber Marionette J… Well, the fact that they can program genetic drift into their machines but cannot clone a woman even by accident bugs me. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that HAVING biological women would upset the gimmick, I’m just bugged at the entire lack of justification for the gimmick’s justification.

Speaking of mangaka going to porn, i think i heard somewhere Tatsuya Egawa, they guy who did Golden Boy, does porn now. If you seen Golden Boy, would you really be surprised.

I do see the guy who did SMJ did Sakura Wars, another OVA i really liked (I have the TV series i got for like 20 bucks at best buy last christmas, i havent gotten around to seeing it yet).

I guess the guys at Terra II tried cloning a woman and got as far as what happened in Alien Resurrection when they tried to clone Riply, and said “Well robots are easier”. I was gonna add the Jurassic Park theory with the whole “nature finds its way” and eventually a clone of a woman would have happened, but its a planet of men not women dinosaurs.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

This shouldn’t surprise you… It’s safe to assume that just about every established artist does porn at some point. The guy who does Blade of the Immortal has volumes of guro artbooks.

Hell, one of the creators of Superman did porn.

    Tim Reply:

Dude, the guy behind the Iconic Archie look was doing porn AT THE SAME TIME. It’s only notable when they become better known for their porn than their other comics, like guys I mentioned.

  3. The original series has some amazingly odd transformations that they never use in later iterations of Cutey Honey like Homeless Honey (which they use a lot for some reason), Woodsman Honey, and Charlie Chaplin Honey.

BTW I think the detective Kevin was thinking of was: Kogoro Akechi.

    [Reply]

    Tim Reply:

New Cutie Honey had some odd one offs too, like Rocker Honey- Idol Honey, but slightly punk, A transformation I always think of as Chun Li Honey, and a Commando Honey.

But yeah, Homeless Honey was damn useful.
Wonder why she didn’t use that in The Live where the Homeless were big players.

  4. I think that idol thing is only in Japan, because women here want to one-up one another in high school. Or so I think; didn’t really have many female friends.

I don’t think Tuxedo Mask is gay, he’s just in a shojou anime. XD

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

Yea, japan high school system seems to rely on a monarchy with rule and power from what you say.

I guess that would stop alot of gossip in school, because if some snob wants to one up the queen bee of the peep squad, she would get told and put in her place.

Then again, its all fun drama from a distance to see a leader taken off the podium and replaced for that week, then see the same thing over and over.

I think the guy I had in high school who was like “Oh man, that guy is THE GUY” was this dude Jake. He would pretty much talk about the party at his house from last week and how to survive dry heaving or whatever. He was the type that when he told a story, he wanted everyone person in the room to get his attention. He wasnt to much of a douche as far as I know, i had no real beef with him.

    Ah… high school.
