Animazement reminds us why we not only love anime, but also love being part of the fandom. Strangely, the opposite is simultaneously true.

Kevin and I has so much to say in our podcast report of Animazement 2010, we had to split it into two parts! In part one, we discuss Thursday’s pre-con harbingers along with the big con kick-off on Friday. Stay tuned for part two when we follow up with Saturday and Sunday.

For those curious about the kinds of horrors inflicted upon hapless otaku during Anime Hell, the video playlist has been posted here.

Please notice the Knuckles cosplayer. This will be important later.

In the Method to Madness podcast, I’m joined with my good friend Kevin “The Business” Gray to discuss great anime and video games that you should be watching as well as ones you should feel ashamed you are watching.

  2. You should bring a sign to put right in front of them to embarrass them like “Walk around me because Im to dumb to move to a table” or “Best magic battle ever! Stand around and WATCH US PLAY!!!”

Speaking of people dueling like that, i heard of this one guy that worked with some friends of mine back in high school and they told me this guy had a Yu Gi Oh dueling table out of the back of his car. So i guess when some serious crap went down, he was prepared and his top would open to fold out a Yu Gi Oh table. Im dead serious this is what they told me.

Yea, you told me what you cosplayed as, because i saw that character in one of my Hobby Japan mags I picked up and im like “Crap, what is this show”.

And that whole “Marko Polo” thing, I was thinking of doing something like that next year but with “When I say Sailor, you say Moon” and see where that goes. I mean, its different, unless Kevin might think it will make him stop and run up to me and knock me over the top floor of the con. Hey, just a thought.

And the whole “inside joke” thing, I always imagine the worst jokes are the ones you laugh at. If you are the only person laughing, just stop yourself. And that whole “Nerds are supposed to be smarter than other people” comment, come on, thats not true. Were human first, and nerds second. So if your really good at showing off your stupidity than being a nerds, that is the first thing to come out. Thats just me theory.

    Cant wait till part two.

Ack! If only it didn’t violate the con’s “no signs” rule. Besides, we’d be to tempted to just beat them with the signs.

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

Just say “What sign, you mean the thing i beat those magic kids with? No, thats my prop, or was.”

Well the idea is to put it by them and walk away hoping they dont notice till security yells at them for having a sign.

  3. Oh yea, I like Kevin response with bringing Huey Lewis and the News to the con. If were going 1985 on that, Id also pick The Cars, New Order, Duran Duran, Devo, Oingo Boingo and probably a few others I cant think off to play at the con. 7 grand for Huey Lewis is not bad.

If you give that Japanese man in the dealers room 5 bucks, he’ll tell you how much that doujinshi you paid $25 for costs in Japan.

I demand pics of the Sunred costume, I wasn’t there on Saturday so I didn’t get to see Ashley’s handiwork.

    Looking forward to part two!

  5. If there was one thing i wanted in the dealers room was this really old vintage poster of Patlabor. It was basically half interior schematics of the suit and the other of the shell. The dude wanted 40 for it and was like “oh man, i didnt mean to put it in there, i might want that out”. For me, i thought about it but never got a chance to go back. Plus, im not that big of a Patlabor fan to get it, but it was a cool poster regardless, even though i think it was well over priced, but i could be wrong.

There was something else i wanted that i know was overpriced, and that was the B Club Bubblegum Crisis ova book. Someone was selling it for like 100 bucks, i know on ebay i can get it half that price brand new.

I misspelled awesome in your facebook album. So now you know who i am.

I, too, ogled the Bubblegum Crisis artbooks. But alas, they just weren’t in my budget.

  6. Great job. The combination of the well-made video and overall tone of your con report really makes it stand out among the countless articles and podcasts that are made on the subject. I look forward to part 2.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

Thanks so much! I wish I could take credit for producing the video, but the extent of my efforts suffice to a quick YouTube search.

Part 2 is just around the corner and I expect you won’t be disappointed!

  7. I know this doesn’t mean much but you guys are slowly taking the spot of AnimeWorldOrder in my heart as #1 podcast. You guys are actually punctual on your podcasts with quanitity and quality.

On a short sidenote: you think you guys could go a little bit more in depth on animation in your reviews? Otherwise, keep doing what you’re doing with the awesome podcast.

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

Pretty much any other podcast took away my desire for AWO, due to the fact that Daryl Surat isn’t on the rest of them (except one or 2 that would have his insight, but they do fine).

After what he said about Initial D, that just ended whatever feelings for them. Ill listen to them again if they have something im interested in. But i do give AWO credit for me having an interest in Yoshiaki Kawajiri stuff. Man, Goku Midnight Eye… im glad I meet you.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

I admit, I still listen to AWO whenever a new episode comes out and I try to pick up Otaku USA when I can to keep these folks gainfully employed.

    Thanks so much!

What about the animation do you mean? The quality? Production? Artistic or technical aspects?

We try our best to give depth to our criticism, but I think most of what we do best is our knee-jerk reaction to whatever freaky-ass cartoon we’ve just seen.

    Art Rodriguez Reply:

Mostly what it looks like and your opinion on the artwork. I woulda given Urban Square a watch earlier if you’d mentioned it looked like generic 80′s stuff. I tend to eat that up.

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

We didn’t? Well, crap… I guess we did drop the ball on that one. But that’s also why we encourage people to visit the show notes for a visual taste as well.

  8. Most of your complaints are pretty generic in regards to anime cons. I’m on the Video Programming staff at AnimeNEXT. We had our con a few weeks ago and I encountered the same idiocy (people yelling tired memes, etc).

    [Reply]

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

I take that as a compliment, since we try to paint with a broad brush in ranting about dorks. We figure that this podcast is accessible worldwide, so we tackle more universal habits of the fandom.

  9. I guess Surat makes some decent living doing an engineer job ( i think thats what he does), writing for Otaku USA and his other full time job of post reading EVERY COMMENT and being the grammar nazi.

He seems very on the ball when it comes to people that dont write and speak english very well on his comment section. I guess my other comment was sorta harsh, but i do check on the site once in a while to see if they did anything that might get my interest. Right now im sorta sampling podcast and getting a feel how other people review anime.

Another thing about AWO was knowing about this guy: http://hokutonofogie.blogspot.com/
If you check this blog, this guy has some great stories of him growing up in the 80′s when anime just came to america and how hard getting anything Hokuto No Ken like was an issue to him, and showing Wicked City at a con in San Antonio back in 1988 without him knowing it was Wicked City, funny story.

    [Reply]

    The Grey Ghost Reply:

Heh… I should probably read the AWO comments more often.

    [Reply]

    ZeonicFreak Reply:

Oh yes, its worth a laugh, to both the listeners and Surat rants about how to write english. He gets pretty intense on that.
