The Dirty Pair is an anime that is due for a comeback. Most anime fans are familiar with these Lovely Angels through their 1990s incarnations: The Dirty Pair Flash OVA and the North American comic books produced by Adam Warren. Only the latter is worth your attention.

Let us not forget our roots, otaku! In this week’s podcast, we take it back to the original TV series from 1985. A grand era before the blight of fan service, where comedy involved actual jokes…not exploitative panty shots.

I’m pretty sure that some time in the recording, Kevin and I pine over how a show like this would likely never find another North American license. BUT! shortly after the mics cooled, our words drifted from our lips to God’s ears… For Right Stuf has picked up the show and will be releasing DVD sets this year. Bye bye, my fansubs!

I know I can't resist!

In the Method to Madness podcast, I’m joined with my good friend Kevin “The Business” Gray to discuss great anime and video games that you should be watching as well as ones you should feel ashamed you are watching.

  1. There isn’t a Live Action Dirty Pair… yet. Otherwise I would have found it by now.

As for the 3WA World Welfare Work Association, they are essentially troubleshooters. Of all types. Military, industrial, counterintelligence, etc. etc. etc.
It’s also an in joke to the ‘real’ Origins of the Dirty pair, when the creator took a friend and their dates to a women’s wrestling match, where the ‘Lovely Pair’ were the highlight match. This lead to the joke ‘If they’re the Lovely Pair, these two must be the Dirty Pair.’ 3WA, to get back to the point, is also the name of a wrestling organization.

As for speed, it’s definitely in LYPH, since in a later episode, they go around 120,000,000 LYPH when they’re in a desperate hurry to get across the galaxy.

Did it stand for “World Women’s Wrestling Association”?

  2. Yes, yes it did. Also, I’d like to correct myself, the tag team match was the Beauty pair, not the Lovely pair. They were Jackie Sato and Maki Ueda.

You can find the info at the Wiki page for All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling.

  3. Out of curiosity, I looked up “Dirty Pair Moghi” and was surprised to find some of the old covers for the show:

Obviously Moghi was VERY different in cuddle-factor in the novel. And…

Lightsabers! It looks like their costume and character designs were kept pretty close to the original anime adaptation.

Here’s the funny thing though: The novels came first and are the basis for the anime. I also learned in looking things up for the show notes that Adam Warren’s version of DP is more faithful to the novel versions. The outfits, Mughi’s design, and they even have the occasional lightsaber!

I just finished Adam Warren’s Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal TPB and am about to re-start Dirty Pair: Fatal, But Not Serious. I’d forgotten how incredible they are!
