In the Method to Madness podcast, I’m joined with my good friend Kevin “The Business” Gray to discuss great anime and video games that you should be watching as well as ones you should feel ashamed you are watching.
This episode, we discuss…
Neeeeeerds!!!
We hate to turn on our own, but something needs to be said of (or rather, to) our less-seasoned ilk. Years of anime clubs, conventions, and miscellaneous encounters with fandom gremlins have left Kevin and I jaded. In order to vent our frustrations and perhaps enlighten those in earshot, we spend this episode telling stories of our favorite dorks.
Look to your left. Look to your right. Look in the mirror. One of these poor bastards is probably described in this podcast.

I apologize for the poor audio quality of this episode. There’s some kind of interference that occasionally creates a buzzy sound. I cleaned it up as best as I could; hope it’s still enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this podcast, so many truisms that most nerds are afraid to discuss. For years I didn’t really know the difference between a geek and a nerd, till I started going to the anime club and wow! Social nerds! What, we’re going out for drinks? Conversing about various topics? AWESOME.
I think you guys should discuss the mystical division between male and female otaku…maybe some relationship advice or something.
BTW, did you draw the fangirl picture?

I’m afraid I can’t take the credit for that one. It’s something I’d found on Google image search and it seemed most appropriate.

Hmmm… I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Are you talking about the different types of geeks unique to the female side versus types of male geeks? Or are you suggesting that there’s a cultural wedge that tends to keep fanboys and fangirls separate from each other?
Being a guy, I’m not entirely sure I could appropriately represent the female point of view on the topic. ^^;;

Well I have just noticed recently that there are a lot of nerd girls that only swim around a girl population like they are insulated from male otaku, and I’m kind of curious as to why that is. But it’s strange because there are a plethora of male otaku, but they’re social circles usually involve very specific likes that only involve females…I don’t know, i just thought it was an interesting social phenomina that other otaku may or may not be interested in or have experienced.
But anyways if you’re interested in talking about that idea, I’m sure there are otaku women that you know (i.e. me or someone else) who would be willing to add a female perspective on the matter. :P

We might have to get you in for a reappearance for that one, just to make sure we get a female perspective straight from the source. I’d invite Ashley, though she’s microphone shy.

…and just for the record I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what you guys are posting/will post concerning “male/female-centric).
In my opinion, good anime and bad anime have no gender, your advice is pretty much universal. Actually you guys were discussing what I brought up just a bit, and have been touching on it, in every other episode. Such as, “guys don’t do this shit or you’ll never get a girlfriend and/or scare her.” Us girls appreciate all the things you’ve guys said on our behalf, really!

Awesome episode. It’s hilarious that I recognize all your examples, and was there for several of them myself.
I echo M’s sentiments. An ep on the mystic ‘Male/Female Otaku divide’ would work.

This is worth exploration… I admit that most of the thoughts I had lined up for future rants, etc, were pretty male-centric. Though I stand them behind the thin curtain of defense that the majority of the fandom is male.
